We are looking for volunteer writers who are talented, creative, experienced in the craft of writing, and who are willing to educate and entertain their peers. If chosen, your article will be used in Inkwell Newswatch (IN).

Our writers provide previously unpublished how-to-write articles, writer lifestyle pieces, and writing industry news. In exchange for the articles we choose to publish, we offer ad banners, excerpts, and promotion of published work. Our published authors also join the list of contributors on our masthead. See the Benefits & Legalities section below for details.

Initial submissions can lead to future paid assignments and writing opportunities. Plus if you are good enough and consistent enough, you could get a paid column within our publication once we become a paying market.

What Content Should I Submit?

Generally speaking, we are open to all how-to-write articles concerning all genres of writing, including but not limited to: fiction, nonfiction, children's lit, poetry, screenplays, theatrical plays, Internet content, technical writing, and business writing.

To understand what quality of writing cuts the grade for inclusion in our publication, please read our publication and review our archives before sending in a submission.

Topic Ideas

Our main site, The Freelance Writing Organization International, constantly receives questions about the following topics:

  • Scene, plot, flow, idea generation, research, character, voice, time management, writing technique development, fact checking
  • Funding, grants, agencies that support the writing arts
  • How to get/deal with publishers, agents, publicists, editors, television and movie producers/directors 
  • Legal representation, infringements, rights, etc.
  • Writing tools, such as software, search engines, accounting packages, word usage 
  • Capitalizing upon writing events, seminars, workshops, conferences, critique groups 
  • General writing education, the basics like grammar, syntax, etc. 
  • Breaking into/finding markets in: journalism, TV, fiction, nonfiction, freelancing, ad copy, screen/stage play, poetry, comedy, etc.

So, if you have something you would like to get credit for, receive free exposure, gain experience or an addition to your portfolio, and see your work in print, let us know by following our guidelines below and sending us a submission or query.

Reviews of How-To-Write Books
Once you have a book in mind, proceed as follows:

  1. Check that the book has not previously been reviewed here by searching the archives of book reviews (select Book Reviews from the drop-down list under Category and a set of editions from the drop-down list under Article Archives). Read a few of these reviews to get a feel for how our reviews are written and presented; use them as a model for the reviews you want to submit to IN.
  2. Read a book about writing (and/or the writing life) that has not previously been reviewed.
  3. Give it a score out of 5. 
  4. Write a review of a book that scores a four or better. 
  5. Send the review within the body of an email to with "Book Review: Title" in the subject line of the email.

We'll also need your bio of 50 words or less and a photo to go with your review. As with all our published content, this is a volunteer gig.
If you have recently read a good how-to-write book, write a review and send it along. You can decide to submit reviews on a regular basis in which case you could become a regular contributor or just as the whim takes you. Note: The book reviewer must not be the book author.

Writing Items Of INterest

Our Items Of INterest section delivers news about the writing industry, writing opportunites (in the broad and general sense, not specific gigs), obituaries about authors or people influencing the industry, tools that are useful to writers, innovations in the industry, and such like. Political content is generally avoided, but opinion is welcome where it is useful to writers at large.  

All submissions and queries must be within the body of an email. Attachments are immediately discarded unless they are pictures as requested below.

Note: You will be informed within 90 days whether or not your submission will be published. This helps to ensure that, if the piece is not used by IN, you can submit it to other publishers without breaching our exclusive first publishing rights above. If you have not heard from us within 90 days, please feel free to contact us.

If possible and applicable, please include the following with your submission:

  • Author picture .jpg or .gif 100x100, max 10KB
  • Author bio, max 50 words
  • Author website URL and email address (this email address will accompany your published article)
  • Article content picture .jpg or .gif 200x230, max 20KB
  • Excerpt from previously published content included within the body of submission email (see Ad Banners and Excerpts section below), max 500 words
  • Excerpt picture (see Ad Banners and Excerpts below) .jpg or .gif 200x230, max 20KB


  • Picture files can be sent as attachments.
  • Do not compress any files into an archive. Compressed files are automatically deleted.
  • Do not send your actual submission or query as an attachment!

The following promotions of you and your work are what you will receive for your submissions if published.

Ad Banners and Excerpts

In exchange for using your article, we offer not only the opportunity to place your banner within our publication, but we also offer an additional banner to be permanently included in the rotator displayed throughout our website. If and when your submission is chosen, we'll be in touch with specs on the graphics needed for the banners and where to send them.

Sometimes, we also run excerpts of your existing work to complement your how-to-write article, providing an example of your published work for our readers to see first hand. If you are sending in a how-to-write article and have a published work such as a book, screenplay, or poem, for example please inform us at the top of your email and include a excerpt of 500 words maximum at the bottom of your submission email.

Please also include the date it was published or used, who published or used it, and a URL link to the work (if applicable). Include an ISBN # when applicable too.

If you have a picture that complements your excerpt, such as a book jacket cover, please send it along with your submission. The same goes for a picture that complements your article. See above for picture file sizes and formats.

By sending your submission to us you agree to the following:

Inkwell Newswatch (IN) is offered exclusive first publishing rights, with additional rights to edit, archive, re-use, anthologize, and syndicate the content. Upon publishing your submission, IN acknowledges that copyright and additional publishing rights revert to the author for use in any way the author sees fit to use the article in conjunction with the rights of IN above. You further agree that the following line of text and/or link will be included in any and all reprints, including reprints of book reviews:

Editorial Styles & Standards

Submitted and published articles are edited to IN's particular styles and standards. Our reference for spelling style is the Oxford Dictionary Of English, second edition. The Canadian Press Stylebook, 14th edition is our guide for grammar style and publishing standards, with the following additions:

  • Use of the serial comma is preferred.
  • Each word in a title has its first letter capitalized.
  • The use of italics is rare and reserved for specific emphasis of meaning.
  • The use of quotation marks is reserved for actual quotes.
  • The use of only one space between the end of one sentence and the beginning of another is preferred.
  • The use of straight quotation marks rather than curly quotation marks is preferred. This preference also applies to apostrophes and commas.
  • Any mention of IN as it represents Inkwell Newswatch uses all capital letters and is italicized.
